July has been an AMAZING month for vintage finds! Not only did I find a Horrockses dress at a car boot sale swarming with dealers, I also managed to find an Alfred Shaheen Hawaiian dress in a vintage store in London
If you follow me on Twitter you will know that I have lost many a vintage gem to the numerous dealers that hunt at car boot sales. It’s really quite disheartening when you see a whole car load of beautiful 50s dresses scooped up by them, knowing full well that the items will be sold for 10 times the amount paid. I’ve lost out on countless dresses & even a 1950s lucite purse…gutting!
BUT! This month’s treasures have been SO good.
Lets start with the Horrockses dress. This was a morning when the dress found me. I arrived at the bootsale later than planned & had just seen a 1950s lucite purse exchange hands for £9. NINE frikking quid. So I was a bit bummed about that until by chance I wandered over to a store where I was immediately accosted by four lovely ladies & one of them said to me:”Now you look like a girl who would appreciate a Horrockses dress…”
This caught my attention so I said I would be & asked if they had one to which this peach polka print dress was presented to me. It’s not your typical Horrockes print dress, looking quite basic as far as their incredible prints go, so I was a bit hesitant about it at first.
However, all four women insisted that I try the dress on & mostly to entertain them I obliged & am so glad I did!
This is one of those dresses that looks so much nicer on. The cut & tailoring of this dress is fabulous & whilst the hem line is lower than I would normally wear for a full circle dress, it is incredibly flattering despite being a bit too big. I never thought I would own a Horrockses so am so happy to add this to my ever growing collection.
My second AMAZING find is a 1950s tiki print wiggle dress by Hawaiian designer Alfred Shaheen! AND I found it in London
When I was in San Francisco I was lusting after a few I had seen in Haight & Ashbury. Unfortunately the $300 price tags were above & beyond my price range.
Just by chance, I wondered into a vintage store a few days ago whilst waiting for the bf to finish browsing in a nearby store. Also by chance I remembered the pretty tropical dresses I loved in San Francisco & asked the shop keeper if she happened to have any Hawaiian dresses. The next thing I know she pulls this dress from the numerous racks & says to me “I have this one”.
The pretty print caught my eye & when I took a look at the label I was amazed. So much so that she said to me, “Why…did you doubt me?”
I explained that I didn’t & that it’s just that I wasn’t expecting her to show me a Shaheen…& within my price range too!
This dress fits perfectly everywhere bar the chest area…unfortunately I don’t have that bombshell frame so will have to take this in a bit with clever pleating & no cutting!
I love my new dresses! Will pop up some Outfit of the Day posts very soon!
In the meantime, what’s been your best vintage bargains? Would love to know!
