This Saturday I went along to a one day dress making course! I”ve always wanted to learn how to use a sewing machine & understand how to read sewing patterns so when a Groupon deal came about I was all ready to sign myself up & give it a go.
The course I chose was at the London Textiles Studio. They have two locations, one in Farringdon & another on Bow Road, East London. My course was at the Bow Road branch which was a little bit of a mission to get to…grrr you District line!
When we originally signed up for the class the info said the classes would be in groups of 6 but when I got there there was about 15. Fifteen girls all trying to get the tutor’s attention & fifteen girls all trying to cut patterns out in a small confined room. Not the easiest of tasks & a lot of time was spent waiting to get space to actually cut our fabric.
Still, once we got started we learnt how to cut a pattern out, create facing for it, & construct a simple A-line dress.
Overall I’m happy with the finished dress…it’s not my preferred style (I kind of find A-line dresses a bit too mature!).
Still, given that it was my first attempt I think all in all it looks ok! I chose a vintage belt to cinch in the waist & give it more shape & paired with my new Melissa wedges which I am in love with
A little bit about the bangles…
See the fish bangle? I won it on Ebay a couple of weeks ago! I’ve never been too bothered about auctions as such but this one I had my heart set on. So much so that I stalked it every day, watching to see if anyone else had discovered this little gem & duly panicked when someone placed yet another bid on it.
I’d seen a similar reverse carved bangle in a little antique jewellery store in Santa Cruz when on holiday with the bf. It was stunning & I loved how the fish looked so lifelike. However, I didn’t buy it as that particular bangle cost around $500 (approx £323)!
When I saw this bangle on Ebay & from a UK seller too I couldn’t quite believe it. After 7 days of patiently watching I finally won this beautiful art deco bakelite bracelet for £52! Expensive for what is essentially plastic but I LOVE it & I especially love the history of it…1920s…Gatsby era!
So hands up, who’s found an eBay bargain lately? I wanna know what you bought! x
